1. Powerful, but could be easier to use
This microwave is massive and really powerful. It doesn't have superfluous buttons, and it seems to defrost and re-heat evenly.

But...

The dial, which is simple enough to use, is much harder to use than a simple keypad. It's very sensitive, non-linear (meaning between 1 and 10 you can pick the exact number of seconds, after 10 you can only get to the nearest 5, after 1 minute, only the nearest 10, after 5 minutes, only the nearest 15) and it's always a guess how far to turn it. Turn too far, then adjust. Then adjust again. And maybe again. I always know what I want to set it for and I could touch "4" then "5" much faster than I can find ":45" on the dial. Why'd they fix something that wasn't broken?

To set the power level, you have to press the Power Level button once for each 10% you want to go down. So if you want 90%, you press it once. If you want 20% to soften butter, you have to press it 8 times! Really? Why couldn't they use the dial for...

2. Very large, excellent results!
We have used Samsung and GE Profile microwaves, and this one is superior. It has enormous capacity. The interface is very convenient, although it takes a bit of getting used to because of the dial rather than a number pad. It is very powerful and heats quickly and very evenly. It comes with clear instructions. I have only one complaint about the interface, which is that the power setting does not display the power being used, so you have to remember what you programmed in (and hope that you didn't make a mistake because there's no feedback about what power is actually being used). The instructions could also be clearer about how to program multiple cook times -- the machine actually allow pre-programming of three time/power combinations, which is better than the two allowed by most machines.

The inverter technology allow true differences in the power output. Most machines simply switch the microwave generator on and off proportionately. This microwave works better...

Easy to use..but very dim display light
This is our 3rd Panasonic microwave in 12 years because they are the only brand that fits in the "box" in our cabinetry and we find them to be a very good product. (yeah...I know, they should last more than 4-5 years, but I don't realistically expect that.) When we set this one up, we noticed that the display light that shows time, power level, etc. is extremely DIM and you have to sort of move your head around to catch it at a good angle to be able to read it. We called Panasonic customer service who were no help at all. They asked me if it was plugged in after I told them that the microwave worked fine, but the light was almost illegible. Really? How could the microwave work if I didn't have it plugged in. Then told me to try a few other things and kept repeating what the repair and warranty policy was---net, no help at all. 1. Very pleased with this oven
After having my first microwave for about 18 years, it finally died and I did a lot of research before deciding to buy this Panasonic. Having Amazon gift certificates, free shipping and a $25 kitchen and housewares discount influenced my decision and I have to say it was a great buy. I'm very pleased with the evenness with which it cooks and defrosts.

I upgraded from a mid-size 650-watt oven to this full-size 1250-watt oven. I have to remind myself sometimes that everything needs less time to cook. However, there are a lot of pre-programmed features in this unit that make it easier. For example, there is a sensor cook button that selects the time and power level for different kinds of foods depending on how many times you tap the button. Types of food include baked potatoes, frozen pizza, frozen entrees, fresh vegetables, frozen vegetables and omelettes. I made a baked potato last night that was cooked perfectly. We've had this microwave for a couple of months now, so I can't comment on its long-term reliability.

Good:

Mostly, it's been fine. It meets my primary requirement for a microwave, which is that you can put food into it, press 3 0 START, and it cooks for 30 seconds at full power. (It's amazing how many microwaves fail that test, requiring some other key before the time. Easy enough if you know how to use it, but not for visitors.)

It can do relatively complex sequences like:
- Wait 5 minutes (to line up completion time with other foods)
- Cook 4 minutes
- Wait 20 seconds (to give me time to stir)
- Cook 3 minutes
- Wait 2 minutes (post-cook "let stand" time)

It'll prompt you through most operations, though ... the ... prompting ... is ... kind ... of ... tedious.

The Sensor Reheat feature seems to do a pretty good job of warming food up to a good serving temperature. It...

Fantastic
I have always been partial to Panasonic microwaves and this is one of the best. It has had constant daily use for over two months now with an excellent performance record.

In fact, I have only used my stove and oven twice since this purchase (for a large frozen pizza). The sensors are very accurate - oatmeal is perfect. With two frozen dinners, I had to add additional time, but everything else has cooked, reheated or thawed as expected.

Earlier reviews mentioned resetting the clock and a loud beep. Panasonic must have listened to their customers as neither problem appears to be present on this model.

With 1250 watts, it does reheat more quickly than older models so I would suggest reducing the time until you get used to your new microwave.

UPDATE - 10/21/2008 - In December it will be two years - still perfect!

I've only had this 2 days, but I thought I'd get a quick review up on it.
This oven is so new, even Panasonic didn't know about it. I called them up, and their customer service knew nothing. A search on the Panasonic website came back blank.
So, what the heck, I bought it. It appeared to be very similar to the SD688 models, with one exception. The digital display got panned on the 688 as being hard to read from a normal standing angle. I guessed that this fancy blue display was their answer to that, and I was right! The bright blue display is very easy to read up close without bending over., and from an angle.
I rarely cook in a microwave, so all of the fancy button options are moot. "Inverter Melt", "Popcorn" "Inverter Turbo Defrost". If I have to keep the manual handy to use my microwave, I'm not likely to use that feature.
I did try the "Sensor Reheat" feature on some boneless chicken. It stopped it at the right time.

Another reviewer gave a lot more details, and that was helpful. I'll keep it short and stick to the things I noticed:
1) No light when you open the door, which is odd, but doesn't really bother me.
2) You set the cooking time with a dial, rather than typing it in on a keypad. The dial to set the cooking time is good, I guess. Not much easier or more difficult than a keypad, so I don't have a strong opinion about it.
3) Prior models (according to reviews) had problems with the door lock and the display. Both are great on this model. Door locks solidly and the display is very easy to read.
4) The Sensor Reheat button worked very well the few times I've used it to reheat leftovers. They came out nice and hot, but not overdone. That's the only feature I've used, other than just setting a time and pushing "start".

Died after two months / poor warranty service from Panasonic
While I liked the idea of the "Inverter Technology" that lets you easily cook at lower power without duty cycling the microwave, that feature doesn't outweigh Panasonic's poor warranty policies. My microwave died after two months of use - everything was working fine one moment and then the lights went out, dead as a doorstop. (Being an electrical engineer, I think it's a safe assumption that the power supply is what died but that's only an assumption)

Had this died within the 30 day period, Amazon would have printed out a shipping label, had UPS show up at my front door to pick up the defective unit and most likely cross-shipped a new microwave out to me so I could have a replacement in just a matter of days. Instead, since it was outside the 30 day period, I had to go through Panasonic's warranty service. Their only option is to have me hand-deliver the defective product to an authorized Service Center; the nearest one is a 90 minute drive from here. That would be...
